i started writing this whole post about my own struggles to stay true to myself and to be more and more confident in standing where i am, nerdy, sometimes awkward, kind of a romantic, pretend-playing and all. but then i decided i wanted to start with that great "i am what i am" song, and then i couldn't attribute it to gloria gaynor, but to la cage aux folles, and then i had to see who had originated the role, and then i started looking on youtube, and so, friends, as my queen helene masque dries, instead of some introspection about my own work lately, i present you: "i am what i am" the definitive review.

first, according to my research, the role was originated by george hearn (who you might remember from my crushed-out posting of the musical version of sweeney todd -- he was sweeney to patti lupone's mrs. lovett.) here's george:

this says it is an actual recording of an actual show with keene curtis as albin. this is beautiful, really from the show, from closing night! and it is FUCKING BEAUTIFUL.

there is also this, the opening number, from la cagelles, the zaza chorus girls (note the line: "we face life though it's sometimes sweet and sometimes bitter/we face life with a little guts a lot of glitter")

and of course, gloria:

i have been thinking a lot lately about lj and what i want it for. i don't want a public venue for everyone to see my life; i want to talk about stuff that i feel funny just putting into space.

so i did the first friends list cut i have done in probably the 8 years i have had this lj. i really just want this to be occupied by people i talk to frequently, am active-not-historic friends with, et cetera.

part of the reason i have avoided doing this is the propensity for lj drama dot com. i am lj drama dot com adverse. if you have lj drama you want to talk about, then cool, let's talk about it, but also realize this ain't really no thing. all my personal day to day ephemera is on facebook these days, anyways. i am evaluating the role of lj in my life.
